With over 35 years of Information Technology experience in higher education, Ed brings a wide range of experience to XL Law and Consulting. He has most recently served as the Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer, doubling up as the Interim Director of Enterprise Architecture and Development at the University of Illinois Chicago, a Carnegie Research 1 university.
Ed has extensive experience across the information technology spectrum, including the development and implementation of security and privacy policy, cloud governance models and processes, HIPAA privacy and security, FERPA, enterprise architecture, intrusion detection, preservation hold requirements and procedures, EDR/XDR, network monitoring, incident response. He also has substantial experience with GDPR and PIPL requirements and risk-based approaches to satisfying the corresponding compliance requirements.
Ed’s interest and experience in many aspects of IT throughout his long career enables him to understand complex systems and identify areas at risk.
As Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer, his focus was on identifying new and existing risks, areas of weakness and mitigation strategies to prevent damage to the university’s assets and reputation.
As interim director of enterprise architecture and development, Ed focused on identifying and replacing legacy systems to enhance the university’s infrastructure for the future, but to also remediate the risk of running unsupported systems and applications.
Ed is a firm believer that privacy and security revolves around the nature and sensitivity of the data, and that awareness is key to identifying and protecting assets.
